The Constitution of India grants the President of India the power to appoint the Chief Justice in consultation with the outgoing Chief Justice, who will serve until the age of 65 or if removed through impeachment. According to convention, the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court often receives the suggestion for the appointment of the next Chief Justice. This custom has, however, been broken twice with the appointment of A. N.Ray in 1973 and Mirza Hameedullah Beg in 1977. As the head of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice is responsible for allocating cases and appointing Constitutional benches to deal with important matters of law as per Article 145 of the Constitution of India and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966. The Chief Justice also attends to administrative functions such as allotting a roster, appointing court officials and managing general court proceedings.
