Droupadi Murmu (born 24 November 1960) is an Indian politician and the current Governor of Jharkhand. She is the first tribal person to be appointed as the governor of a state in India. Murmu was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has served as a Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha.
Murmu was born in Tamar in the Indian state of Jharkhand. She attended the Ranchi Government Girls High School. She obtained her Bachelor of Education degree from St. Xavier College, Ranchi, and her Master’s degree in History from Loyola College in Chennai.
In 2014, Murmu was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from the state of Jharkhand. During her tenure, she was a member of the Standing Committee on Social Justice & Empowerment and the Parliamentary Forum on Weaker Section. She was also a member of the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament.
On 18 December 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Murmu as Governor of Jharkhand. She was the first tribal person to be appointed to this position in India. She is also the first female Governor of Jharkhand. During her tenure as Governor, Murmu has made significant contributions in the areas of improving the education, healthcare, and sanitation systems in the state. She has also worked to improve the socio-economic conditions of the tribal community by starting several initiatives such as the Van Bandhu Yojana, which ensures access to basic amenities in rural tribal areas.

Droupadi Murmu is a member of the Kharia Adivasi community of Jharkhand, India. She is a former Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha, representing the Mayurbhanj constituency in Odisha. Murmu was born in Jhargaon, a village in Littipara block of Pakur District in Jharkhand. She was a farmer until she entered politics in 1974. She is married and has three children. Murmu is involved in various social and education programs for rural women and children in her hometown of Jhargaon.

She started several schemes for tribal welfare, including the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, skill development programs, educational scholarships, and free health camps, among others. She also launched the ‘Jharkhand Samriddhi Yojana’, which aimed at promoting investment in Jharkhand, under which, nine mega industrial parks and six MSME clusters were set up. These initiatives helped in providing employment opportunities as well as the growth of industries and trade in the state. Murmu also took several steps for ecological conservation in the state, including setting up eco-parks, providing new solar energy projects, and carrying out several afforestation activities.
